How to Register Your U.S. Divorce Decree at the Turkish Consulate

October 18, 2025 by Ceylan

If you are a Turkish citizen who finalized a divorce in the United States, registering your divorce decree (boşanma kararı) in Türkiye is essential for it to be legally recognized there. This process ensures your updated marital status appears correctly in the Turkish civil registry. In most case, Turkish citizen spouse would see the updated marital status in their edevlet account within 3 business days of applying at the Turkish Consulate.

I can assist you with every step of the process—from translation and Apostille to coordinating your Turkish Consulate appointment.

Required Documents

  • For divorces finalized in California, I will need your FL-180 divorce decree and FL-190 notice translated from English into Turkish.
  • If your divorce includes a settlement or agreement, those additional pages MAY also require translation.
  • For divorces from other U.S. states, I will review your decree and provide an exact estimate after evaluation.

Process Overview

Step 1: Translation of Court Documents
Translation fees for a two-page divorce decree typically range from $120 to $200. Translations are generally completed within 2–3 business days.

Step 2: Apostille and U.S. Notary Approvals
Apostille service, which includes the notarial approval, is usually between $250 to $550 and takes approximately 1-3 weeks to complete.

Delivery
All documents are mailed via USPS Priority (2–3 business days). You don’t need to mail original documents—email scans or PDFs are sufficient.

What’s Included

  • Turkish translation of your divorce decree
  • Official affidavit of translation
  • U.S. notary and Apostille certification
  • Complimentary document review for completeness

Next Steps After Receiving the Apostilled Divorce Decree

  1. The Turkish citizen spouse must email the Apostilled decree to the Turkish Consulate to request an appointment.
  2. At the appointment, the Turkish spouse will sign and submit the registration forms.
  3. If the other spouse is also Turkish, both must appear in person within 90 days of the initial appointment date.
  4. If one spouse is non-Turkish, the divorce will be registered within 3 business days of the Turkish citizen’s application, provided all documents are valid.

Once registered, the updated marital status can be verified via the Turkish e-Devlet portal.

***If you indent to register your U.S. divorce at Turkish Courts (Tanima ve Tenfiz Mahkemesi), you’d need your divorce decree AND your divorce agreement to be translated and Apostilled. Tanima ve Tenfiz Mahkemesi application may be required if (i) there is minor child (ii) one of the parents live in Turkiye and/or (iii) divorce agreement is contested. In those cases, there are usually lawyers involved. It’s better to place your translation and legalization order at once in line with your lawyer’s requests.

One does NOT need their divorce agreement to be translated for Turkish Consulate processes. One does not need a layer for Turkish Consulate applications. Please email your documents to receive an exact price and delivery time estimate.
